Rio Rancho is a fairly new town, most of which was developed in the '50's and sold to investors around the country. It lies directly to the northwest of Albuquerque. The original plan was ambitious, including in area of about 73 square miles, nearly 40% the size of Albuquerque. However, as you can see from the chart above, it only has about 14% of the population of Albuquerque.
Rio Rancho is home to one of the three largest Intel fabrication plants, as well as many new smaller tech companies. |

A few years ago the leaders of Rio Rancho decided that there was a need for a new City Center. Since Rio Rancho had lots of vacant land, they elected to start from scratch, a few miles away from the existing city hall, out in the middle of the desert. So, when was the last time you saw a fast growing city of 76,000 start all over with a new City Hall in the middle of no where? To give you some perspective on "middle of no where" check out this image from Google Earth. The white line under what is labeled Rio Rancho City Hall is 3 miles long! Near the bottom right of the image you can see a label for the old animal shelter, at the north edge of the old city center.

Now take a look at this picture of what they built there -
